How To Stop Overthinking And Relax: 5 Simple Strategies

Overthinking can go from what to wear to if you will be stuck in the job you hate forever. If only we were taught how to control our emotions and not let it control us in schools!

Overthinking is caused due to the fear of uncertainty. To stop overthinking and relax seems so hard because it is different for everyone.

Most people think that by overthinking about a certain scenario in their heads all the time, they will know all possible outcomes (guilty!) and can prepare themselves before hand for it. As practical as it sounds, it is unnecessary!

If you find yourself asking “how do I stop myself from overthinking“, then you are one step closer to stop overthinking and relax. As they say, awareness is key!

I think most people tend to overthink when they expect perfection and it doesn’t go well or when they feel like they will be stuck in a certain “phase” forever.

To think that you will be stuck in a job you hate (or anything else) 5 years down the line or forever seems frightening. I’ve felt it too. In this post, I will cover some simple strategies you can use to stop overthinking scenarios.

5 Ways To Stop Overthinking And Relax

1. Stop Emotional Avoidance

Don’t beat yourself up for overthinking. The more we resist, the more it persists.

The perfect example for this would be when we try to stop binge-eating. We will try to suppress it for a few days and then somehow trickle down back to it!

Stop suppressing or neglecting your thoughts. Accept your feelings, and a huge burden is lifted off your back. This is the first step to stop overthinking everything.

So, next time you find yourself running away from your thoughts, please address it.

Facing your thoughts head on can be intimidating, but you’ll have to do it. Taking your time and being patient with yourself is important.

2. Imagining Best Case Scenario

The best way to stop overthinking things is by imagining the best case scenarios instead of worst case scenarios.

Another way as to how you an stop thinking at night, is by cutting out illogical scenarios.

The worst case scenarios that are never going to happen. Also, stop thinking that you will be stuck in this place forever.

That thought was one of the main causes for my overthinking. Think about what you would do if nothing could possibly go wrong helps.

3. Opening Up

Opening up about what’s bugging you will help you realize that you’re not alone! So, talk about it.

If you cannot do that, consider writing. Take a piece of paper and write down what you are overthinking about and why.

While writing, segregate your thoughts into useful and useless. This gives a clear picture of how many of your thoughts are useless!

Another way I like to distract my mind is by painting. Painting is soothing and the best part is you don’t have to be good at it.

Also, if you really want to talk about it but fear judgement, go on reddit. This probably sounds crazy to you, but there are many people feeling the same things.

You can stay anonymous and get answers from people! This helps to get your mind back to normal.

4. Stop Expecting

If you are someone that expects everything to go as planned all the time, you need to slow down!

There is no such thing as perfection. We are all humans and we make mistakes.

Most of the times we can stop overthinking and relax if only we stopped perfecting things.

Do your best and forget about the outcome. I know it can be hard at first, but it gets easier!

You can solve this by indulging in multiple activities so that you don’t get too focused on the outcome of one.

5. Rephrasing Your Thoughts

Rephrasing those unnecessary thoughts in your brain is a very effective way to deal with overthinking.

Ask yourself questions like “How bad is it going to be? ” regarding the situation you are currently overthinking.

Then proceed with “What are the odds that it will happen?” This could be useful if you are overthinking about how your important meeting will go.

Most of the times, there will be no odds! So, you’re good to go. If there are odds, think about “How can I relax my brain and tackle it?“.

Taking your time and thinking logically will definitely stop you from overthinking.
